STANFORD'S CONTINUING STUDIES PROGRAM

Psychology 99: Introduction to Health Psychology: Our Behavior, Our Health
Spring 2022

Health psychology is the scientific study of behav- iors that relate to health enhancement, disease prevention, safety, and rehabilitation. Since most serious diseases and disorders now result from people’s behavior, it is important to understand what drives our behavior. We will explore how we define and measure stress, the role stress can have on our health, and how we can better manage pain. The course will take an in-depth look at Western medicine (e.g., the American healthcare system) as well as alternative approaches (e.g., traditional Chinese medicine, meditation, chiropractic treatments). Through group discussions, students will gain an understanding about different treatments used around the world. In addition to relevant readings, student will have the opportunity to watch a short documentary in class (either on stress, the sugar industry, or cannabis) and write about it. By examining the ways that lifestyle impacts health, students will have an opportunity to apply some key course concepts to their own lives.
